Disney Plus has announced the release date for the highly anticipated Obi Wan Kenobi series which will debut this upcoming May. The show will follow Obi Wan after the events of the climatic third movie Revenge of the Sith. The fight scene ended with Obi Wan dismembering his former Padawan on the deadly planet of Mustafar. This planet is known for having extremely high temperatures, being highly inhabitable and a heavy presence of flowing lava that moves like the ocean during a storm.
Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope saw Obi Wan much older than what he was during the prequel trilogy. That means this series has a lot of potential in terms of how much story it can explore with this character. The galaxy is very vast and with recent series’ success such as Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian & Book of Boba Fett it seems that the television route is a very viable route for this franchise.
Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are both reprising their roles as Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader respectively. This means that fans will receive the sword fighting cinematic action that they saw during Episode III. These two actors went through extensive training and intense fight choreography in order to bring to life the best live action light saber fight in Star Wars’ history. Seeing the two former friends fight while traversing platforms and dodging lava was a sight in itself. It’s safe to say that with newer technology, the fights will look even better. The concept art above is the official work for the upcoming television show so fans should expect a feeling of nostalgia as well as freshness when Vader makes his return.
These actors have built up chemistry from working on the third film together and it’s very likely that they’ve retained some of the training they went through. Seeing them be able to return to that years later will definitely be a sight so see for many. A YouTube video as released a while back by YouTuber FixItInPost which showed a reimagined version of the fight between an older Obi Wan and Darth Vader during Episode IV. This demonstrated the fan’s yearning for a newer fight scene with these two force users and the post credit scene of Rogue One made it even worse. Vader today is much more scary than the Vader of the 70s & 80s and it’s simply due to the technology that film makers have available to them.
Now with this series being developed and funded by Disney along with the returning actors, this show may be one of Star Wars’ all time greatest if they handle it right. It would also be amazing to see more characters appear such as Ahsoka, Boba Fett or even Cad Bane. Only time will tell how this series will be handled but in the meantime be sure to check back here for more updates!
