In a recent interview with EW, David Ayer spoke about his desire to release his original cut of his Suicide Squad movie, this all comes after the positive reception of Zack Snyder’s Justice League release on HBO Max.
“I get it, it’s a business… It’s frustrating because I made a really heartfelt drama and it got ripped to pieces and they tried to turn it into Deadpool, which it just wasn’t supposed to be. And then you take the hit, you’re the captain of the ship, my name was on it. [Laughs] Even though it didn’t represent what I actually made, I would take all the bullets and be a good soldier. I made an amazing movie. It’s an amazing movie, it just scared the s*** out of the executives” David Says.
He goes on to say, “I think the studios see now that there can be canon, there can be non-canon, the fans just want to touch it… They love the characters, they just want to spend more time with it. And people are way more sophisticated about how movies are made and want to be participants in the journey. There’s room for different things, different versions, different assets being shared with the audience. I think it just helps strengthen the community”.
With the upcoming release of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, there’s no telling if we’ll get an Ayer cut or not. However one thing is certain, fans want it. Along with #returnthesnyderverse, #releasetheayercut has been trending as well on twitter. Fans want to get a look at the film the director shot and worked on without moving on from what they saw in theaters as the final word from this universe. It’s starting to become apparent that there’s a disconnect between what the executives think DC fans want and what they actually are looking for. It’s also worth noting that there may not be a four hour cut of this movie like we saw for Justice League but that doesn’t mean that the film that we got isn’t anything different than what Ayer intended. Still just like anything in this business, only time will tell how these events unfold.
